3 Tips to Holiday Fitness

We are taking a break from Zumba classes for a few weeks. If you haven’t already signed up for the email newsletter you definitely should so that you don’t miss announcements for the new season in 2012.

Here are three tips to keeping your fitness routine over the holiday break

1. Stick with a Routine you Love

When I’m not doing Zumba I engage other activies that I enjoy or find challenging. It is really important to continue with your regular workout schedule (be flexible enough so you don’t give up if you miss a day), but what is even more important is to find something you enjoy and make time for it every day.

Here are a few workouts that I do on my “days off”

  • Workout Videos: Jillian Michaels, Tae Bo, etc
  • Running
  • Walking (you have to really work hard on your walks though)
  • Snowshoeing
  • X-country skiing

2. Save Treats for Special Occasions

Holidays is one of those times that you can’t avoid a treat once in a while. Go for it!

But save those guilty pleasures for the special occasions during this season. It is important to continue keeping track of day-to-day intake or things can really fly out of hand (I know from experience…)

Here are a few treats that somehow seem to be ignored in calorie counts:

  • Drinks!! All beverages (especially alcohol, pop, sweetened “juice/tea,” eggnog!) are so sneaky, you may want to commit to drinking only water (or tea/coffee) when you’re not at a party.
  • Tasting while cooking (every nibble of xmas cookies counts)
  • Free samples at Cherry Republic ;)

3. Balance your Daily Diet

Starving yourself in-between holiday parties isn’t going to help as much as you think, and even though counting calories is important eating a balanced diet throughout the break is even more essential.
You may have to adjust your portion sizes to do so, but following the new “my plate” guide to healthy eating (the food pyramid is history) is a fantastic way to keep your eating habits healthy and your fitness plan in tact.
